When there’s a burning in your heart ~

What do you do when there’s a burning in YOUR heart? Do you embrace it? Do you ignore it for other pressing items – like finding a J.O.B. – picking up the kids – putting dinner on the table – playing volleyball (again!?)?

As I was progressing up the unbearably annoying, red light splattered road speckled with people who have nothing better to do than drive slowly, Death Cab for Cutie’s “You Are A Tourist” comes on the radio.  For those of you unfamiliar with that awesome song, here are some of the key lyrics, so you can allow your mind to wander as mine did yesterday. I have the music playing in the background now.

(This… Fire… Grows… Higher…)

When there’s a burning in your heart
An endless yearning in your heart
Build it bigger than the Sun
Let it grow
Let it grow
And there’s a burning in your heart
Don’t be alarmed

(This… Fire… Grows… Higher…)

When there’s a doubt in your mind
‘Cos you think it all the time
Framin’ rights into wrongs
Move along
When there’s a doubt in your mind

When there’s a burning in your heart
And you think it’ll burst apart
Oh, there’s nothing to fear
Save the tears
Save the tears

When there’s a burning in your heart

And if you feel just like a tourist in the city you were born
Then, it’s time to go
And you find your destination with so many different places to call home
Cos’ when you find yourself a villain,
In the story you have written
It’s plain to see
That sometimes the best intentions
Are in need of redemptions
Would you agree
If so, please show me
(This… Fire… Grows… Higher…)

When there’s a burning in your heart,
When there’s a burning in your heart, (This… Fire… Grows… Higher…)

(This… Fire… Grows… Higher…)
When there’s a burning in your heart.

Why that song struck a cord, just then, was because I just turned down an offer for a fantabulous job.  With fricking incredible people. (very low pay, but that wasn’t at the heart of this decision).  I said, at that round table, with the Queen, and her right hand:

“I have spent my whole life saying yes to opportunities to please other people, subjecting my life to that commitment.  I usually ended up disappointing them, and all the while wondering why I was not happy.  As much as I love this opportunity and that you thought of me,  this is the first time I have judged an opportunity solely on the opportunity alone. Sadly, I cannot accept it because…, I have a burning in my heart.  I have to honor that and follow through.  I don’t exactly know what that is or where it will lead, but I have to commit to myself.  I have had entrepreneurial fever all my life, and not honored it because I never believed in myself.  I have something important to bring to the world, and must act on that & find my way.  As the commercial says: ‘in life there are people who are brakes, and those who are the gas’.  I want to be the gas!  🙂 Thanks so much for considering me. Perhaps we can partner in the future.”

I headed home, with the radio off until I hit this highway, splattered with red lights.  Was the universe speaking to me, that moment I turned on the radio, to “when there’s a burning in your heart”?

Will you stop at the next red light & listen to what your heart, your soul, your core is telling you?  Or will you move on, wondering why you: cannot sleep, or keep gaining weight, or are just plain old being cranky all the time?

“The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled.  For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” Unknown
